The agents felt really lacklustre in the game and were rather uninspiring to use. Snipe the enemy general with artillery or have your own general hit even when trying to hide, maybe somewhat historical but felt more like a separate mini-game in battles and generals could just as well have been abstracted out of the battles with a capture/escape/dead result based on the type of victory/loss. General's being on the battlefield was mostly pointless. But so many of the battles absolutely felt tedious and boring, especially vs lower tech armies.

The battles were all over the place, some field battles between equal powers when both were high up in the tech tree were actually pretty interesting. I heartily agree the music is not enganging, no Overture moments and even the culture music was weak. Then the closeness of the regions in Europe meant that a single battle often involved 4+ armies reinforcing and while they often felt like torture, if you won the battle you tended to win half of Europe. mostly based on my American colonies, yeah- the economic balance in that game was terrible. Then later playing as India and conquering America to find I had the strongest economy in the world. When I played as the Dutch and conquered France in 2 battles I was incredibly disappointed. Somewhat agree- Empire TW is my least played TW but I have a couple hundred hours in Napoleon which is in many ways only a tiny bit improved version of the same game.įirst problem, the map. Chasseurs à cheval are probably the best unit in the game. You wont get very far charging head first into bayonet line infantry, but they can be devastating otherwise. IMO cavalry is also too weak (Napoleon for example used cavalry effectively during his campaigns, but in ETW you can almost only use it vs artillery or routers), making the game even less multi dimensionalĪgain, not true.

Really annoys me when people want to throw historical accuracy out of the window just for some pseudo-diversity. Having grenadiers, skirmishers, cavalry, etc are all good. I will also say that indeed Line Infantry should make up the core of every army in Empire, there is also other units which are useful. If you are unhappy that the French line infantry uniform is too similar to the British line infantry uniform, you are 200 years too late to complain. The uniforms are based on the uniforms which were actually used. Well that's literally how it was back then. I get that battles did have some uniformity, but you can still design them in a more interesting fashion, have different faces, uniforms, hats, maybe more "special" units etc. I rate Empire quite highly personally.īoring: almost every battle has mostly 1 unit: line infantry, that looks and attacks the same for every faction. There is no "family", no role-play element, nothingĪgree with some of your points but disagree with your conclusion. There are almost no sounds when anything happens (e.g. There is no epic music during the campaign or the battles. Sound and music: everything feels toned down. It is so immersion breaking that Prague or Paris consist of like 10 buildings E:TW has these tiny, horrible forts or around 10 buildings just randomly standing on an open field. Even Rome 1, let alone M2, had amazing sieges. sieges and city battles are just awful. at least in Europe, most battle maps look very similar IMO cavalry is also too weak (Napoleon for example used cavalry effectively during his campaigns, but in ETW you can almost only use it vs artillery or routers), making the game even less multi dimensional Boring: almost every battle has mostly 1 unit: line infantry, that looks and attacks the same for every faction. QoL: replenishment is annoying as hell. Everything is close to each other and you constantly attack settlements or get attacked in them by major powers. Everyone constantly pillages them and upgrading buildings clicking around all over the place is a pain the little villages/buildings are horrible. However, so many things about the game are just bad or disappointing: And meh do I find it disappointing, despite the fact that it isn't that buggy nowadays. Barely played it then, tried it again recently.
